7 Rockpools to Explore on the Sunshine Coast
ROckpools are underwater wonderlands that are just the right size for children to explore.
As the weather warms up, there's no better way to spend a sunny day than clambering along the rocks on the beautiful beaches of the sunshine coast.
Grab your swimsuits, sun hats, and sunscreen, and take your family on a journey to uncover the natural wonders that lie underneath the water’s surface.
Here are seven idyllic spots for rockpool adventures that both parents and kids will cherish.
1. Noosa National Park
While Noosa National Park offers a wealth of attractions, one hidden gem often overlooked is the enchanting world of rockpools. Park your car at the National Park entrance or Little Cove and take a scenic walk along the coastline. Explore at your leisure or venture down to Tea Tree Bay where you can find rockpools on the west side. Or for something really special, head around to Granite Bay and visit the Fairy Pools. These natural tidal pools are tucked between the basalt rocks just west of the headland's tip at the eastern extremity of Granite Bay.
2. Coolum First Bay
Explore the captivating rockpools on the north side of First Bay. Park on the road or at the Second Baylookout, or stroll up from Coolum Main Beach along the boardwalk. The rockpools here are easy to access, but it’s probably best to avoid this spot when there are strong onshore winds.
3. Shelly Beach
The southern end of Shelly Beach is a haven for kids to explore rockpools. The shallow waters are perfect for a tranquil dip, and the nearby park with its shaded tables makes it an excellent spot for a family picnic.
4. Moffat Headland
Head to Moffat Beach and embark on an adventure along the rockpools that meander around the headland. While at Moffat, consider taking a dip in the serene waters of Tooway Creek – perfect for family-friendly swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
5. Mooloolaba Beach
Exploring the rockpools between Mooloolaba and Alex Headland is a must. These coastal treasures offer a captivating glimpse into the marine world.
6. Point Arkwright, Yaroomba
At Point Arkwright Lookout, you'll discover a small rockpool nestled at the end of the beach, offering a protected spot to splash in shallow pools away from the ocean's waves. It's a perfect place to cool off and enjoy some shade under the pandanus trees.
7. Point Cartwright
If you're in the mood for more diverse rockpool exploration, Point Cartwright rockpools are a fantastic choice. Park at La Balsa Park or Point Cartwright headland and walk down to the rockpools across the river mouth from Mooloolaba. This is one of our favorite spots for discovering marine life on the Sunshine Coast.
Rockpool Safety Tips
Rockpools are full of wonders but there are also some things to be mindful of while exploring. Share these tips with your children before your next rockpool adventure.
Watch for Venomous Animals: Keep an eye out for cone snails, octopuses, and stonefish. Different colors and sizes can indicate potential dangers. Always check before picking up shells.
Care for the Animals: Approach the creatures gently and with compassion. They may ink if frightened, which can be irritating. If you hold them, handle them as you would want to be held.
Being Mindful: Mind your distance from the ocean’s edge, and stay alert, for large waves especially if the tide is coming in. Keep your hands away from rocks where animals may be hiding, and walk mindfully to avoid startling animals or causing harm.
Remember, holding your kids can disrupt their natural balance and pose a safety risk, so encourage them to explore on their own while being cautious of their footing.
Wherever you decide to go, make sure to time your visit during low tide to enjoy the best experience.
Now that you know where to find these fascinating rockpools, let the exploration begin!
